Jackson Pind, PhD

Dr. Jackson Pind is an Assistant Professor in the Chanie Wenjack School for Indigenous Studies at Trent University. He is a mixed Anishinaabe-Settler historian with ancestry from Alderville First Nation.

Jackson is the author of the award-winning book Students by Day: Colonialism and Resistance at the Curve Lake Indian Day School (McGill-Queen’s University Press), recipient of the Canadian Historical Association’s Clio History Prize (Ontario) and co-winner of the Canadian Historical Association’s Indigenous History Book Prize. 

Histories of Indian Day Schools in Canada

Dr. Pind will explore the histories of Indian Day Schools across Canada, examining how these institutions functioned as central instruments of colonial assimilation while remaining sites of Indigenous resilience and resistance. Drawing on archival research, oral histories, and community partnerships, the talk highlights the lived experiences of Survivors, the diversity of Day School experiences across regions, and the lasting impacts these schools continue to have on Indigenous families and communities. It also considers the importance of documenting these histories to support truth-telling, education, and reconciliation.
