         Adam Shoalts, PhD

Adam Shoalts is a professional adventurer and best-selling author. In 2013, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society for “extraordinary contributions to geography” and in 2017 completed a nearly 4,000 km solo journey across Canada’s Arctic. A geographer and historian, he holds a Ph.D. from McMaster University, has participated in numerous archaeological projects and digs, and enjoys long walks in the woods. He is currently the Westaway Explorer-in-Residence of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society and in 2016 was named a national champion of the Trans-Canada Trail.

Beyond the Trees: A Journey Alone Across Canada's Arctic

Shoalts will discuss his newest book, Beyond the Trees, which tells the tale of his nearly 4,000 km solo canoe journey across Canada's Arctic, alone. Beyond the Trees was named "one of the best books of the year" by Indigo, and spent multiple months on the Globe and Mail's National Best-seller List. Shoalts's presentation will include photos from his journey, including close encounters with wildlife, and discuss the beauty and solitude of trekking for weeks without seeing another person.

Most importantly, Adam’s story explains why we urgently need to save vast wild places while it’s still possible.
