         Shane O'Mara, DPhil/PhD

Shane O’Mara is the Professor of Experimental Brain Research at Trinity College, Dublin - the University of Dublin; he is a psychologist and neuroscientist.  He is a graduate of the National University of Ireland, Galway (BA, MA) and of Oxford University (DPhil/PhD). He is a Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science (USA), and is an elected Member of the Royal Irish Academy.

His research interests focus on functions ‘within the brain’ (memory, stress, depression, for example), and on the ‘brain in the world’ (using a ‘brain’s-eye view’ lens on social, cultural, and policy issues). He has published many scientific papers, and has written for many newspapers and magazines.  He publishes a regular newsletter at https://brainpizza.substack.com/  - small, medium, and large slices of writing on brains, behaviour, & lots between.

In Praise of Walking

His book 'In Praise of Walking: A New Scientific Exploration' was chosen by the editors at Amazon.com as one of the best science books of 2020.  Dr. O'Mara will discuss his book which explores the science behind this most overlooked but defining human adaptation - one that enabled us to conquer the world - by walking together to new, and perhaps better, lives. It has been widely translated (French, Dutch, Spanish, Norwegian, Russian, Chinese, Greek, German, Polish, Italian, Slovenian, Romanian).

This event is part of the Fall 2021 Speaker series.
